Our History

RSSOC First Meet at Silverstone from Dec 1972

A photo of the launch of the RSSOC copied from the December 1972 edition of Reliant Review,

which is no longer published.

The Reliant Sabre and Scimitar Owners Club was formed in 1972 by a small band of Reliant enthusiasts who had been meeting for some time before the formation of the club. The photograph above is of the Club's first meeting at Silverstone and shows the founding members with their Sabres, Coupés and Scimitars. The meeting was sponsored by Reliant, who were very supportive of the RSSOC in its formative years, and was published in the December 1972 edition of Reliant Review.

The Sabres had been successfully campaigned by the factory in various events, including the Monte Carlo Rally, and owners continued competing in sprints and hillclimbs throughout the country. In fact, because of its rallying history, the Sabre is the only Reliant car that can be raced in open competition against other cars, except for sprints and hillclimbs in which all models can compete.

Very soon, the Club had proved itself to be just what was wanted by the owners of Reliant sports cars and a thriving economy developed around the models. There were many dealers around the country, all known to the Club. Indeed, Reliant, its dealers and the RSSOC were mutually supportive, the Club itself becoming the focus of attention as trade and private owners alike looked to us for support for insurance, valuations, maintenance and parts. With the demise of Reliant, the Club is now generally recognised as the main source of information for Reliant sports cars and as a rule we are able to help with technical and other enquiries as we have a vast archive of information, much of which was obtained from Reliant.

We are recognised by DVLA and Motor Sport UK as an official source of information and are also approved by Motor Sport UK to conduct sprints, hillclimbs and race meetings. The Club is affiliated to Motor Sport UK as Ordinary Members of the General Council.

Although our name suggests that we concentrate on Sabres and Scimitars, we support all Reliant models where required although the smaller 3-wheeled and 4-wheeled cars are probably better served by their own specialist clubs.
